Mind the gap - between the train and the platform

Performance exclusions

Sometimes our on-time running performance is affected by incidents that are beyond our control. These incidents are referred to as 'force majeure incidents'. On-time running data is recalculated to reflect what the result would have been, had the force majeure incident not occurred.

Force majeure calculations only come into effect when a single external event impacts 10 or more peak services. This level of impact is considered to be significant. These calculations are made after the end of the month and then reflected in our monthly and yearly on-time running records.

Force majeure incidents are incidents over which CityRail has no control. They can be caused by, but not limited to, the incidents listed below.

  • Elements/weather: floods, bush fires, landslides and washouts, lightning, storms, earthquakes, cyclones, natural disasters and fallen trees or debris.
  • Unavoidable incidents: fires, explosions, gas leaks, loss of power supply, radioactive contamination, state emergencies, suicide, attempted suicide, fire brigade operations, incidents caused by other rail operators, road accidents near the railway, passenger injuries and passenger illness.
  • Security incidents: bomb threats, suspicious packages, police operations, vandalism, people trespassing on railway lines and passenger disturbances

This website displays adjusted and unadjusted figures relating to all incidents that meet the criteria of force majeure. On-time running performance from September 2005, coinciding with the introduction of the new timetable, has been adjusted for these incidents.
